Victories for Newbold and Lions, narrow defeats for Saints and Welsh

Ever-improving Old Laurentians notched up only their third win of the season on Saturday, at home to 11th-placed Market Rasen & Louth. OLs won 14-10 but are still bottom of Midlands 1 East and eight points adrift of Matlock, who are their opponents away next week.

At the other end of the table Newbold stay third behind Bedford and Derby after their 61-0 win over 12th-placed Newark at Parkfield Road. Bold host sixth-placed Wellingborough next week.

Lions maintained their promotion bid with a 34-17 win over seventh-placed Old Wheatleyans, away. Lions are still fourth in Midlands 3 West (South) but just two points from the top. Leaders Evesham have 53 points, Ledbury 52, Old Coventrians 51 and Lions 51. Next week Lions are at home to bottom club Pershore, while Evesham and Ledbury play each other. Ledbury have played one game more than the other sides in the top four.

It was a disappointing result for Rugby St Andrews, who went down 19-12 at home to third-placed Stockwood Park in the East division. With better finishing it might have been a different story for seventh-placed Saints. Next weekend they travel to St Ives.

Fourth-placed Rugby Welsh also narrowly missed out 13-11 at home to second-placed Keresley in Midlands 5 West (South). Next week they have another tough game in prospect away to Birmingham Exiles, who are third.
