Town visit Bedworth today for final pre-season friendly

Rugby Town boss Dave Stringer continues to be pleased with his squad’s pre-season preparations, after they recorded another victory over a team which will operate above them in the non-league pyramid in 2013/14.

After their 1-0 success over Conference North Brackley last Tuesday, Valley recorded the same score against NPL Premier Division Stamford at the weekend – having also given a good account of themselves previously in the 4-2 defeat at the hands of another Conference outfit Leamington.

Stringer reflected: “Everything is going well and everybody looks in good shape. We have tweaked the shape of the side a little compared to last season, and it appears to working.

“We’re playing some decent football, and creating a lot of chances. We’re not being as clinical as we probably need to be, but that is down to the individuals concerned and hopefully they can put that out of their systems before the real action starts next week.”

Town travel to Bedworth for their final warm-up game, with the first Calor League Central Division fixture next week, August 17 - when Valley visit Aylesbury United.

Stringer was delighted at the progress of Sam Belcher, after the midfielder featured for a second time in pre-season as a substitute against Stamford.

He said: “It had looked like Sam would be out for the season, but his knee injury turned out to be nowhere as bad as we had feared.

“That’s a massive bonus for us, as he was such an influential player for us last time-out. We are now trying to get him match fit as quickly as possible. We’re not sure whether he will be fully ready for the start of the season, but it’s still a great boost to see him out there.”
