YEARS of dedication have been rewarded with a world title for Rugby Triathlon Club’s Mike Smallwood.
He has won gold in the 65-69 age group at the ITU World Championship series final in Beijing, China.
Against athletes from all over the planet, Mike completed the Sprint Distance Triathlon course in 1 hour 17 mins 3 seconds.
He was joined by two fellow club members for the 18-hour journey. Adrian Wyatt was then eighth in the 35-39 age group with a course time of 1-13.13 and Chris Gidlow, in the 25-29 competition was 22nd in 1-15.57.
Mike said: “On race day I enjoyed the open water swim in clear water and then onto the bike section which was made tricky by a downpour of rain – so very slippery in places.
“The run was a tight loop in front of the main grandstand with a brief section outside the stadium area to the turn point.
“The finishing announcer called out, ‘and the winner of the 65-69 age group- Michael Smallwood’.When it’s a world championship it doesn’t get much better than that – unless of course it’s at the formal presentation where the announcement is ‘the winner and world champion – Michael Smallwood!’”
