GET ON THE WATER FOR FREE AT DRAYCOTE WATER WITH RYA’S SUMMER OF SAILING

Fancy having fun and trying something new with family and friends this summer?

Go along to Draycote Water Sailing Club on Saturday, July 2 (11am - 4pm) where anyone and everyone (aged six years upwards) can try sailing and windsurfing for FREE and be part of what is set to be a huge summer of sailing in Britain.

Jeremy Atkins, Draycote Water SC Commodore, said: “Whether you’re a newcomer, a family or you’ve sailed or windsurfed before and want to get back on the water, there is something for everyone. Sailing can be as physical or as relaxing as you want to make it, you can sail with others or on your own, do it competitively or potter about and just enjoy the gentle escape of being outside in the elements.

“We’re delighted to be opening our doors again for people to come and have a go and experience the freedom, fun and exhilaration of getting afloat.”

Draycote Water SC, situated on the A426, just south of Dunchurch in Draycote Water Country Park, is a recognised RYA Training Centre meaning it conforms to the highest standards of quality and safety. All equipment, including wetsuits if required, will be supplied and refreshments available. Just wear soft soled shoes, dress for the weather and bring along your sense of fun and adventure!

From the history-making British Sailing Team sailors racing for gold on the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic waters, to the Louis Vuitton America’s Cup World Series arriving in Portsmouth in July and the adventure of the Swallows and Amazons film remake, starring Rafe Spall and Harry Enfield, due for release in August, inspiration to get active afloat will be everywhere this summer including in Warwickshire!

In May more than 2,500 people across the Midlands took advantage of the chance to try sailing for free as part of the national Push The Boat Out have-a-go festival of sailing organised by the sport’s national governing body, the RYA, with over 150 of these having a go at Draycote Water SC’s own event.

Now building on that success, you have another chance to sail into summer right on your doorstep…

Gareth Brookes, RYA Regional Development Officer for the Midlands, added: “We’ve seen with Push The Boat Out the appetite for sailing is there across the Midlands but there are still too many people who don’t even realise they can get on the water so close to home, or that it’s too expensive, inaccessible or elitist, or that you need to own your own boat to go sailing. But none of this is true, and we want to prove that to the public this summer.

“It’s commonly cheaper for a whole family of four to be members at a local sailing club, including the chance to hire boats, than it is for one adult to be a gym member. This is the perfect chance to discover the reality of what sailing is all about yourself for absolutely free.”
