SYNCHRONISED swimming star Sophie Randle, 15, has been selected to compete for England in June.
After intense training as part of the England Talent Programme over the last four months, the Rugby Swimming Club youngster was named as part of the Under 15 team to compete in the prestigious Primorje Cup, to be held in Croatia.
To cap a magnificent few months the Rugby High School girl was also chosen to compete as part of the England Duet in Croatia - the selection being the highlight of the youngster’s swimming career to date.
Sophie will swim alongside England under-15 team captain, Jorja Brown, from Hampshire. Both young swimmers are renowned for their power through the water and have been asked by the England Senior Coaching team to perform the very same routine swam by GB’s senior duet in the Beijing Olympics.
As well as numerous training sessions at the National Performance Centre in Aldershot, the girls have been fitting in extra practice at the Ken Marriott Leisure Centre in Rugby.
They are very grateful to DC Leisure for their support of the young pairing. The competition takes place in the middle of June - before flying to Croatia, Sophie will complete her preparations by spending next week training at the National Sports Centre in Crystal Palace. continued on page 95
Rugby’s superb news did not end there. Joining Sophie on the plane to Croatia will be Rugby Synchro’s Head Coach, Hannah Dudley. Hannah, one of the most respected Synchro figures in the Country, has been asked to represent England as one of the Judges invited to officiate at the competition. England only take one Judge to each International event and this selection reflects the growing impact that the Rugby Coach has within the sport of Synchro on a National scale. With so much of Sophie’s development down to the astute guidance and tutoring from Hannah, it will be fitting for the young Coach to witness her swimmer’s International Duet debut.
The Olympic sport of Synchro is attracting some great reviews and growing in popularity. This tough sport combines the stamina of swimming with the grace and artistry of gymnastics and dance - it is a great way to enjoy competitions or just to stay fit for all age groups.
