Rugby’s young star makes debut against US Open champions
Jake Hersey had a day to remember making his debut on the grass courts at the Wimbledon Championships last week in the Boys’ Junior Doubles. Court 7 had a healthy crowd watching as Jake and his doubles partner (for which this was their first Grand Slam event) took on the number 1 seeds who back in September won the US Open Junior Doubles.
The match proved to be a good battle with several of the games going to deuce and it was then that their opponents used their experience to win the critical points and eventually take victory.
Jake who was 16 in May is currently ranked around 230-240 in the world at U18s said: “This was a fantastic day, not only having the honour of playing in the tournament, but also having access to Aorangi Park to be able to watch and warm up amongst some of the top players in the world. This has seriously inspired and motivated me to continue working as hard as possible to try and work my way up the ITF rankings.”
Next up for Jake it is back on the clay and on his travels for four weeks in representing Great Britain in Romania, then Moscow for the European Championships, onto Spain for the Summer Cup qualifying and if successful in that they will go to the Summer Cup finals in France.
He is grateful to TennisFirst, SportsAid, Babolat and Peugeot for their support.
