Mini Orange Classic
On a beautiful Saturday afternoon Rugby boys Ben Stuchbury and Devon Christie played in the final round of the Classic Event. With five teams taking part and some of the best players in Warwickshire left it was sure to be a long hard day.
Devon managed to win all his singles matches which gave Rugby a great start. He beat the player from Leamington 7-0, 7-6, the player from Esporta 3-7, 7-1, 7-6, the player from Sutton Coldfield 7-0, 7-1 and the player from Tanworth 7-6, 2-7, 7-5. Ben was having some terrific rallies and his positive attitude helped him. Some of his scores did not reflect the quality of play in his matches. He lost 7-1, 4-7, 7-2 to the player from Tanworth, the Sutton game was close narrowly losing 6-7, 7-2, 7-1, he had a very confident win over the Esporta player 7-5, 7-5 and he won against the Leamington player 7-5, 1-7, 7-2. With two deciding doubles to play the boys had a very real chance of making it through to the finals in June at the Edgbaston Priory Club, when the ladies’ tournament is on. They had a confident win over Sutton winning 7-1, 7-4. The doubles against Tanworth was a very entertaining match. There was some superb play and the boys narrowly lost 7-5, 7-6. However, they finished second overall on the day and progress through to the finals which is a great reward for all their hard work.
