Rugby LTC Olympic
In order to commemorate the Olympics coming to London, Rugby LTC held their very own Olympic Superstars event last weekend. The idea of the event was the brain child of Graeme Baker who felt it would be great for the youngsters of today to have a try at many different sports.
He explained: “The event is based on the old Superstars which I used to enjoy so much on the TV during my youth.”
There was a great turnout of 30 competitors aged between 5 and 13.
These were split into three groups based on age and ability, in order to challenge for their very own Olympic gold, silver and bronze medals. The different sporting challenges they faced were; lawn darts, cricket bowling, crazy catching, target tennis, basketball, football, table tennis and tennis.
Graeme said it was fantastic to see all the children having a great time and enjoying the sporting challenges. The older Green group saw a titanic battle throughout the day between Ben Stuchbury and Liam Green. Both finally ended up with 122 points and a tie for the gold medal. Kate Rollinson claimed the bronze medal.
The middle Blue group also witnessed three very competitive youngsters challenging for the medals.
Finally, Zachary Wenham won the gold with 103 points, William Garthwaite took Silver with 102 and Joey Green was one point back in bronze with 101. In the younger Red group, Jake Wilson took gold with 95 points and Alex Rollinson claimed silver with 86 points. However, special mention must go to five-year-old Daniel Garthwaite who won the bronze medal with 79 points.
After a lunch break, the youngsters turned their hands to a few team games such as Unihoc and Volleyball.
Many thanks must go to Rachael Baker, Michelle Stuchbury, Katrina Rollinson, Gemma Trodd, Juliet Green and Ian Capewell for looking after their groups in an exemplary manner.
Men’s & Ladies Doubles
After all the poor weather recently, players were very pleased to see the sun for the men’s and ladies doubles tournaments last Sunday.
In the Ladies event, Rachael Baker captured her sixth title with Natalie Victoros as her partner for the first time.
They overcame the strong challenge from Jo & Katy Outhwaite. Natalie Baker & Andrea Randle finished in 3rd position.
The Men’s event was a lot closer with very little separating the top four of Brian & David Heathcote (6 wins,) Matthew Outhwaite & James Ward (7 wins) Paul Baxter & Michael Alexander (7 wins) and Marcus Powell & Graeme Baker (6 wins). All had ended up beating the other during the round robin stage.
However, it was Paul & Michael who held onto their title with a convincing win in the final against Matthew & James.
Many thanks to Simon Outhwaite for putting on a wonderful barbecue for all.
