Two medals for Smallwood at World Championships

Rugby Triathlon Club member Mike Smallwood made the podium in two races at the PruHealth World Triathlon Grand Finals in Hyde Park, London, last week. However, Mike was not the only tri club member on Great Britain duty.

In the Aquathlon race Mike was awarded a bronze medal in his age group (65-69 years) by securing the third place just one second ahead of a Russian competitor. He completed the 1km swim and 5km run in 40:58. Fellow club mate Tim Randell completed the same course in 39:51 and was 20th in his age group (55-59). George Goodwin took part in the Junior Elite race and came 7th in a time of 32:28.

Two days later, Mike took part in the Age Group Sprint Triathlon race and again won bronze, missing out on a silver medal by just eight seconds. He completed the 750m swim, 20k bike and 5k run in 1:19:25.

Three members took part in the ‘open’ Olympic distance race (for non GB representatives). Derek Hoyle placed 18th in his age group (45-49) by completing the 1500m swim, 40k bike and 10k run in 2:24:40, Ian Doncaster was 37th in his age group (50-54) with a time of 2:51:38 and Richard Thompson was 69th in his age group (45-49) with a time of 2:49:34.
