Young triathletes secure three silvers in National ISA Championships

It seems that three was the magic number as Princethorpe College athletes ventured to Herefordshire to take part in the Independent Schools’ Association’s National Triathlon Championships.

Taking on the steep ask of this increasingly popular endurance event, three College athletes emerged with silver medals to show for their efforts.

In the Tri Star 3 age group Mollie Dibb clocked a final time of 42 mins 48 secs to take silver in the girls’ race. A 300 metre swim saw the 14-year-old emerge from the water in first place. A decent transition got her on the bike to complete the twelve laps of Lucton School’s playing fields steadily before the 2.4 kilometre run. Clocking the fastest run of the day wasn’t quite enough to give Dibb gold, however, which made it the second successive year that the youngster from Leamington Spa claimed silver.

Two minutes behind her was Princethorpe College’s Tom Warne who finished in 5th place overall. With this his debut triathlon Warne surely has more in the tank to reaffirm that this could be a sport he is naturally inclined to. Cycling the third quickest bike time of the day gave Warne a strong position leaving him little to do other than show his strength over the four-lap run to give him second place.

In the Youth race Princethorpe’s Adam Smith gave a gutsy display from start to finish. Ever reliable, the Year 10 athlete, who trains with Rugby Tri Club, put in a well-paced 400 metre swim, careful not to overcook his efforts before transition onto the bike to endure a 20 lap ride. Smith’s confidence took him through the second stage in just under forty minutes before heading off on the 5K run. A final time of 1.07.44 left spectators exhausted at the thought of all that work but jubilant to see him home in second place.

Accompanying Princethorpe College sports teacher Will Bower commented on the students’ achievements,

“We had some excellent results at the top end,” he said. “Three silver medals in a National event are incredible. Our whole team gained PBs across the age groups, giving us all something to focus on for the next fixture of the season.”

Other notable College achievements were: Tri Star 2 Toby Rigg 4th, Tri Star 3:Matty Rush 5th, Lily Dyble 7th, Sion Murphy 8th. Youth: Maxwell Edwards 4th, Hollie Moore 4th girls, Charlotte Silvester 5th.
