MOTORSPORT: Mallory Park

MALLORY PARK has completed a £50,000 earth-works programme to improve safety and sight lines for competitors and at the same time improved viewing facilities for spectators in a winter make-over.

Track riders and racers will benefit from the barrier on the left of the Lake Esses being moved back by between four and 15-metres. It means that as you enter the Esses you now have a clear line of sight right up to the Hairpin so are much more aware of what is happening in front of you.

"When taken in conjunction with the removal of the Oak Trees on the right-hand side of the Esses last winter, the view from a riders perspective is now much more open with nice level run off on both sides of the track." said Mallory Park General Manager John Ward.

At the same time the run-off at the Hairpin has been doubled from 12 to 24-metres. In order to increase the run off the maintainence yard behind this area had to be infilled with 1,200 tonnes of earth.

Ward said: "The Hairpin run-off is now doubled and that will be welcomed by all track users as a very sensible safety precaution. Our safety record at the circuit is second to none and in recent years we have been recorded as amongst the safest circuits that the British Superbike Championship visits. That doesn't stop us making the improvements and listening to riders in order to bring the facility up to the highest standards."

Further works are planned for winter 2010/11 with the famous Gerards corner having the run off moved back by a further 25metres and the circuit crossing being moved to a more convenient location opposite the medical centre. It follows other improvements since 2007 that includes a safety run-off within the Bus Stop Chicane, removal of the two oak trees at the Lake Esses, levelling and increasing the run-off down the Stebbe Straight, replacing and moving back the safety barriers through the Edwinas section and moving back the safety barriers on the left hand side of the start-finish straight.

Spectators haven't been forgotten either with new banking being built at the Esses to increase viewing opportunities. The first spectator banking to be located at Gerards is currently under construction and will give visitors to the track in 2010 another vantage point to watch the action. New spectator fencing has been placed all round the circuit and the facilities and buildings refurbished and refreshed. Even the parking plans for visitors have been worked on to ensure that visitors have a safe and quick entrance and exit in 2010.

"We have invested a significant amount of money in improving Mallory Park and will continue to do so," enthused Ward. "It has been hard work through the recent cold and snowy weather but the circuit staff have been fantastic and I am sure whether a rider or spectator, visitors in 2010 will notice a big improvement."
