ORIENTEERING: News from the Droobers

RESULTS FROM OVERSLEY WOOD, DYMOCK FOREST AND BURNHAM BEECHES

Octavian Droobers were running through woods over the weekend at three venues in Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Buckinghamshire. At Oversley Wood, near Alcester, organised by club member David Beal, orienteers were navigating on and off paths, up and down slopes, through undergrowth and brambles, to achieve as fast a time as possible on the 3 different length courses. Money raised by the farmer for car parking for use of the field alongside the woods was donated to Acorns Hospice.

On the Green 4.7k course Chris McCartney M40 was 1st in 51.40mins, Andrew McNally M21 2nd in 54.59mins and Mike Hampton M60 3rd 60.16mins. Joe Thornton M16 was 1st on the Orange 2.8k course in 41.27mins, Ros James W45 (S. Mid O Club) 2nd 43.40mins and Kim M70 3rd in 45.45mins. On the short yellow 1.8k course 1st was George Loewy M10 teamed with mum Jane in 38.32mins, 2nd Dan Brennan M12 in 40.31mins and 3rd Ben James M12 in 41.01mins.

At the inter club West Midlands League event in Dymock Forest, near Ross on Wye, league leaders Octavian Droobers accumulated good points to maintain their position. Top scorers and coming in first place were Harrison McCartney M12 on Blue 5.5k course, Stephen Elkington M14, Will Critchley M21, Mike Hampton M60, Trevor Simpson M70, Frank Smith M80, Lesley Ross W21 and Suzanne Humphries W45. Sheila Carey W60 was only 3secs behind winner and just missed out on scoring maximum points.

Meanwhile at Burnham Beeches and Egypt wood in Buckinghamshire, club members missed the worst of the heavy downpours and enjoyed the beautiful beech woods. Bruce Bryant M50 had a very good run winning the Short Blue 5.7k course in 59.54mins, on the same course Liz Phillips was 2nd W45 in 55.14mins and Elizabeth Furness was 1st W55 in 74.50mins. On the Short Brown 9k course Dave Thacker M21 came in 3rd M21 in 68.12mins and Sophie Kirk was 1st W18 in 78.40mins. Bob Brandon was 2nd M60 in 59.54mins on the 7.4k Blue course with Dan Kotecky coming in 1st M16 on the same course in 68.11mins. Julie Emmerson W14 was 2nd W14 on the 4.7k Green course in 55.57mins.
