RUGBY: Long Buckby
Buckby get the better of Daventry

In a high octane game, Buckby kept a second clean sheet against Daventry in the League. Buckby played with the strong wind in the first half and were immediately rewarded with a reversed penalty after Daventry indiscipline. Flynn kicked the 3 points. The Daventry scrum was under relentless pressure from the Buckby eight throughout the game, even during the ten minutes when they were down to seven men due to a debatable yellow card. They weathered the storm, however, and were eventually rewarded with a penalty try due to persistent infringements from Daventry. Flynn converted.
After the break and after some improved back play, Daventry came back into the game but could not get anywhere near the Buckby line. However, Buckby recovered strongly and after having one try disallowed and being held up over the line three times, made no mistake at the end when scrum half, Ryan, went over for a try in the corner. Daventry will be disappointed by the result, but Buckby deserved it on the day. Man of the match was Buckby's Deej Fair.

This was always going to be a tough game with Daventry fielding a much stronger side than earlier in the season but it was Buckby who started brighter and after receiving the initial kick off worked the ball up the right flank, out muscling the Older, larger Daventry pack. Good quick ball from the rucks released Buckbys backs and Robin Ungemuth powered over for the opening score to settle any pre-match nerves that may still have been lingering. Dan McNally's nerves held too to make it the perfect 7-0 start.
The pack continued to dominate their opposition in open play and despite struggling in the scrums still managed to secure good clean ball for stand in scrum half John Chambers to feed the backs who ran riot to score 3 more trys in the half.
Daventry simply couldn't keep up with Buckbys backline with centres Robin Ungemuth and the returning Si 'the assassin' Oakey providing a constant threat in the midfield whilst the back three of Tom Evans, Nick Twigg and Adam Massie stole the show with some excellent finishing resulting in a try a piece for Tom Evans, Adam Massie and Simon Oakey to make the half time score 29-0 to Buckby.
In the second half Buckby were determined not to let up and the picked up where they left off when Daventrys 2nd row caught the initial kick off only to be flattened by the onrushing Buckby back row. A kickable penalty quickly came Buckbys way which was effortlessly slotted away by Dan McNally.
To give credit to Daventry they came back much stronger in the second half and took advantage of some of Buckbys over confidence but not after a 2nd try from Tom Evans had put the game beyond them at 37-0. Despite Daventrys gallant attempts to play their way back into the game it was their indiscipline that really held them back. Substitute Joe Oliver manfully took one on the chin and them watched the infringing Daventry player disappear for a well earned 10 minute break shortly to be joined by 2 of his team mates.
Buckby managed one last try from Craig Darkes running from his own 22 to make the final score 47-10.
Buckby came from 16 v 0 down at half time to win this nail biting U18 game.
In the early stages indiscipline cost the away side dear as Dunstable used the penalties to gain territory and accumulate a 6 point lead. Worse was then to follow as a well chased long kick forced Buckby to try and run the ball out of defence and an error in the dead ball area allowed Dunstable to score a try and increase their lead to 13 points. On the stroke of half time a further penalty left Buckby staring down the barrel 16 points down.
The half time talk was not for the feint hearted but it had the right effect as Buckby started the second by using the wind to put Dunstable on the back foot and two well kicked penalties from Johnny Palmer brought them back into the game. Jamie Bolton went close to Buckby's 1st try but was forced into touch in the act of putting the ball down and Rob Absolom was also held up close. However the forwards were now getting the upper hand. Zak Whittle was on for Wallis and after driving the ball up through the phases they came back wide to put Saunders over. The kick cut the deficit to 3 points.
However, Dunstable were not going to lie down and there followed a 5 min spell of pressure that Buckby did well to defend before moving the ball back into opposition territory. Dunstable then committed a similar error to the one Buckby had made in the first half and Gallagher pounced for Buckby's 2nd try.
The missed conversion left Dunstable with a way back and they didn't fail to take it as they took full advantage of a penalty in front of the posts to take a one point lead.
Buckby had 2 minutes to turn it round and immediately got back into the opposition's half to force a penalty that the referee indicated would be the final play.Johnny Palmer stepped up to pinch a 21 v 19 victory.

In the early exchanges Buckby forwards had the upper hand and after 10 minutes the ball was spun wide for wingman Adam Jones to fly home past 3 despairing Rushden tackles. This went on throughout the first half, with Buckby's forwards winning scrum, lineout and ruck at will, the backs had many chance to spin the ball out wide. Whilst the backs defended admirably, they were a little out of sorts in attack with at least 3 opportunities to go wide at speed spurned for the solo run. However, after 18 minutes George Wyse offered his centre a great line and duly scored a lovely try on the right wing .10 – 0 to Buckby. Soon after on the other wing Adam Jones received a simple, flat pass and simply tore up the field to see Buckby lead 15 – 0 at halftime.
Some bizarre decision making when Buckby were awarded penalties allowed Rushden back into the game early in the second half and only great defensive work by the back row kept Rushden out. There was a fear that overconfidence was going to cost Buckby for a while but on 47 minutes a turnover forced by the Buckby backs allowed Adam Jones to snaffle the ball and cruise in for his 3rd try. Defence was the key from then on and the centre pairing of Barney Houston and Jack McKenna put huge pressure onto their immediate opponents and on 65 minutes this led to mishandling by Rushden and Barney scoring under the posts. A just reward for pressure defense.
