Victory over Old Newts

NC (Midlands) 1 League

Rugby Lionesses 22

Old Newtonians 21

Rugby Lionesses faced Old Newtonians this weekend in the NC (Midlands) 1 League clash. A cold, wet and muddy pitch faced the Ladies but the sun cleared the clouds and a good day of Rugby was forecast.

The Lionesses fielded a strong squad with knowledge that Old Newtonians would bring reinforcements after their last meeting at the end of December seeing defeat in the Women’s Junior Cup, and they didn’t disappoint the Webb Ellis faithful.

The game really was a game of two halves, with the Lionesses starting strongly, a series of crunching tackles, hard rucks and passages of play from forwards to backs across the gain line securing two well worked forward tries, against Old Newts penalty and try. Half time 10-8 Lionesses.

The second half did not deny the loyal Lioness supporters at Webb Ellis Rd a nail biting conclusion with both teams attacking and defending with vigour and passion. Newts scoring, followed by the Lionesses, only to be repeated again by the Newts No.8. But a last minute break by the Lionesses 13, from the halfway, saw her brought down by a high tackle inches short of the line resulting in a penalty try being awarded and converted. Final score Lionesses 22 Old Newtonians 21.

The Lionesses play away this weekend to Sefton Ladies, Liverpool, in the third round of the Women’s Junior Cup all support and roaring required to help the Ladies progress to the quarter finals.
