Rugby complete what has been a busier than expected first half of the season on Saturday when they entertain Newbold-on-Avon Vets at Webb Ellis Road with a 2.15 pm kick off, writes Alistair Bruten.
Assuming temperatures improve and the fixture doesn’t succumb to the frost, it’ll be a busy day for Newbold as their 3rd team/vets should also have a Warwickshire League 3 game at Manor Park.
Last week, this combined side won very well against Hinckley Vets, scoring 50+ points for the fourth time.
Rugby will again be fielding a scratch side although it is noticeable that a core of players are now becoming familiar and valued members of the team.
There will no doubt also be a good number of recognisable players in the Newbold side as well as familiar names as this is a club that players of successive generations start with and, though they may move on at some stage, they often eventually return to, although hopefully one former player won’t be free to turn out on Saturday.
Richard Cockerill, also a former Rugby Lions coach, would be very welcome as a spectator but perhaps a little intimidating on the pitch even now.
