Good win over Rushden & Higham
Rushden & Higham 1st 16 Long Buckby 1st 47
Buckby got off to a cracking start straight from the kick off when they forced a scrum near the Rushden line and captain, Deej Fair, picked up and forced his way over. This was quickly followed by one for Johnny Nixon after quick rucking and then handling from the 3’s. By this time Rushden had woken up and began stifling Buckby at source and also slowly gaining ground. From their forays into the Buckby half, three penalties were kicked and the game descended into a stalemate up to half time.
After the break, and a good talking to from the coaches, Buckby scored their third try by Ed Sitch when Simon Dixon and Deej Fair made good ground to put him over. Unfortunately, Simon was carried off with a knee injury. Buckby’s strong scrummaging was now taking its toll over the Rushden pack and from one scrum Deej Fair broke and passed to Phil Elliott who sped over. Tim Dixon then added his name to the score sheet after a clean line out catch from Ian Tuckley who passed on to Deej Fair and then Tim who ran up the touchline from 25 metres.
A good set move.Nothing from Rushden could stop the next try from Phil Elliott who smashed through their defence and ran in from 40 metres. Rushden then had a period of possession for a few minutes and from one maul managed to score their lone try. However, the best was left to the last when a succession of rucks from the Buckby pack created space for a clinical and well taken second try for Ed Sitch when the ball passed through at least 7 pairs of hands. Surely, one of the tries of the season! This was converted from the touchline by Dan McNally, his 6th success of the game. The final whistle went with Buckby gaining 5 points and adding 30 points to their points difference column.
Next week Rushden visit Buckby in the return match in front of one of their generous sponsors when another open, running game will hopefully take place.
Man of the match was debutant, Ian Matts.
