Great win means it’s all down to deciding game
Long Buckby 79 v 13 Northampton Casuals
Putting their Alliance Cup defeat against an impressive Old Northamptonians firmly behind them, Buckby produced a 13 try spree to hold their league destiny in their own hands.
Going behind from a Casuals scrum, shocked Buckby into grabbing the initiative after rejecting several opportunities to score themselves from the kick off. Captain, Deej Fair, showed the way with an individual try from the back row followed quickly by Johnny Nixon in the corner. With Johnny Hughes leaving the field with a sore shoulder, Ed Sitch moved to the centre and his clean break allowed Titch Ryan to race over. Next, a drive, drive, drive and then out wide, move allowed Tom Evans to score his first. Not to be outdone, Timmy Nixon broke through with a flourish and handed Matthew Gibbs the ball on the Casuals 22. He wove his way through five defenders to score. On half time Tom Evans raced round to score his second after fluent three quarter running to give the home side a 36 points to 8 lead at half time.
Buckby carried on where they left off immediately after the break when Johnny Nixon deftly picked up a pass off his toes from Deej Fair and touched down. Two tries from Jake Toseland then followed when firstly Phil Elliott stole the ball from a Casuals drive and secondly when Ian Tuckley broke through strongly. The 10th try came about when Johnny Nixon ran strongly, kicked ahead and pressurised the Casuals full back to kick across the field into the arms of the ever alert Tom Evans who raced over. Another break by the Buckby captain, to Titch Ryan, put Craig Mason over before Tom Evans scored his 4th under the posts after a storming run. Casuals then scored a deserved 2ndtry through their pack who preserved well throughout the game. Dave Beveridge claimed the last try which was well earned after another compelling game from him.
Buckby go on tour next weekend to Whitley Bay, followed by the deciding league match against Old Newtonians at Buckby, with the league fate of both clubs still in the balance.
Man of the match was Ed Sitch.
