Warwickshire Champions, Clonmell Cup winners and undisputed top rugby union team in the town: That is something to celebrate, says Newbold on Avon RFC club chairman Paul Fereday.

More than 300 players and supporters also felt the same way as they packed the clubhouse and field at Parkfield Road on Saturday. Everyone was treated to ‘happy hour’ with great food and live music from top local group ‘The Difference’.

Earlier in the day 80 golfers had played at Whitefields to celebrate the life of club President Alan ‘Bish’ Bale, who had sadly passed away in February.

Everyone had a drink and toast to him on the 5th hole and drove off at the 14th with Bishy’s driver. Over £600 was raised at the golf for Newbold’s minis and juniors, which Alan had started at the club three seasons ago.

For the record the golf was won by Si Smith, Phil Reed and Matt Stalley, who all came in with remarkable scores! The handicap committee will be meeting.

This coming season Newbold on Avon RFC will be one division higher than all their local rivals. In fact they were only a few league points away from going up to National League 3 last time.

“That’s something we intend to put right this season,” said Head Coach Phil Reed jr. “We have kept all our players from last season and will be seeing a lot of our thriving youth section breaking their way into the senior squads, plus Nick Walton and Tim Murphy have come home to bolster our already strong pack. The future is bright - the future is Red and Black for rugby union in Rugby town.”

Captain Danny Facer added: “Newbold kick off the season at home to Kettering on September 3. The game is being sponsored by Dave Bale, one of Alan’s older brothers and we are expecting a big crowd and a big performance from the team on that day.”
