Newbold Colts start the title defence in style
Newbold Colts 59 Southam Colts 0
On a glorious afternoon in the tranquil setting of Parkfield Road Newbold Colts took to the field in defence of last year’s league title against a very big and mobile Southam squad.
From the start the Southam pack a broke to the Newbold line but this was snubbed out on the 5mtr from with a crunching tackle from Tinache Chinaire and Newbold cleared their lines. After some good rucking and mauling the Newbold pack soon got going and young debutant and Man of the Match Kyle Furlong opened the Newbold 2012-13 account duly converted by New Captain for the season Ethan Wookey.
Good front row work saw No 8 Sam Thompson pick up and smash through the Southam defence off loading to Richard Suddens who went over unopposed. With another of 7 successful conversions Ethan had brought his kicking boots and converts Zak Gallagher first of the day also after some good handling through the backs.
With Sam Thompson now bossing the back at scrum time some outstanding work by the whole squad saw Sam crash over for his well earned try. With Ethan converting again the referee ended the first half.
kicking off down the slight slope Newbold started to take the game to Southam, powerful running lines, and gruesome hits from the front 5, fresher’s Mitchell Wells and Callum Hemming started to show their metal bashing through tackles and off loading to rampaging forwards. Up into the oppositions 22 and from the back of the ruck Declan George span it wide and Zak went over for his second of the day.
A great take from the kick off by sub Sam Udall saw the ball recycled well, a long punt forward saw the ball out just inside Southam’s 22, fantastic work at the front of the line by Tom Dixon saw Sam Udall round of his catch with a very well deserved try.
Again from the kick off, the forwards and backs were intertwining well, with off loads and running lines to die for Richard spotted his chance to bag a brace for the day and went in at the corner. Great defensive work from new lads Woolly plus G & T thwarted any attack the Southam team could create.
Another quality take at the re start from Mitchell saw the ball go through he hands and new face Jack Udall had a break down the wing, great support play from the team saw the mighty Duza Ziba pick up on the 22mtr to slice through the defence giving Ethan the easiest of conversions.
With time running out and the heat going through the roof some explicit handling from the both the forwards and backs saw another new player Kyle Webster crashing over for his first try for Newbold and the game was brought to a close. To Southam’s credit their dogged spirit and never say die attitude was evident throughout the game and they kept on coming back putting our lads under pressure.
All in all a truly remarkable performance from all of the Newbold players especially from the new team members making their debut’s for the club. From the simmering embers of last season’s outstanding efforts, the fire was relit on the opening game of the new season and will burn bright throughout the rest of it. A great game refereed very well by Dave Drabel the enthusiastic crowd were not left disappointed.
The new season is off and running and Newbold Colts seem to running the fastest and hardest, effort will tell as there is long way to go and as such new players will always be made welcome. Please come along and join in, Newbold will always welcome new players and hopefully new players will always welcome Newbold.
