Great anticipation for the new season

There is a great buzz around Parkfield Road, mixed with much anticipation as the new season approaches.

Nick Walton has been elected first team captain, Team Fletcher are in charge of the 2nds and Chopper Wilson heads up a very young looking third team, mixed in with a diminishing number of vets, who are getting too old!

Matt Davies has been working with Phil Reed for the past four weeks or so and training numbers have hardly dipped below 40.

“It’s good but it could be better” is the cry from new skipper Walton.

“I would expect numbers to increase to well over 50, when everyone returns from holiday.”

It’s great to see Ricky Lee here from Old Laurentians, Darren Dean is back from Australia, and with Ed Scott, Terry Boneham, both Rich and Will Allen back after injury and at least half a dozen over age colts, competition for 1st team places will be tough.

Mix all this with a swap to Midlands 2 East(South) and a number of ‘new’ teams to play from the Northampton area, then you can understand why everyone is looking forward to an exciting season at the Bold.

August will see friendlies against Pinley and Old Leamingtonians before a Warwickshire Cup 1st round tie on September 1.

This will be a good build up to the first league home fixture on September 8 against Northampton BBOB.

Training is on Tuesday and Thursday evenings (6.45pm) and new players will be very welcome at Newbold RFC.

Wednesday evenings is juniors training evening. Newbold now run five sides from U18 down, under the guidance of Sean O’Brien, Martin Reed, Martin Green, Niall Murphy, Steve Wakelin and Iain Cahill. Numbers are growing, but young players are urged to get themselves down to Parkfield Road.

“The past few years have seen some extremely successful young sides evolve here,” said Sean O’Brien. “This year should be no different!”

For the first time, Newbold will be running a Minis section, starting at Under 7s. The fun starts on Sunday, August 18 at 10.30am.
