Newbold welcomed a strong Burton Colts side to Parkfield Road for this National Colts Cup tie and lined up with a number of forced positional changes due to a series of early season injuries. Despite this, and having to play with no replacements, the team put in a brave and committed effort and matched a well organised and well drilled Burton side for most of the game.

Starting to find their rhythm this season, the game proved to be all-round better team performance from the ‘Bold – but Burton proved just a bit too strong. The forwards showed themselves to be more organised this week as the they were once again able to find the opposition’s try line. Collecting his own chip through, Curtley Bale made it all the way to the 5m line, where a subsequent pick-and-go from the base of the ruck saw the impressive Tom Love score.

The defence in the back line was another plus point this week with few first-up tackles missed at the gain line. The backs worked hard all afternoon, with Ben Brain and Kier Bale distributing the ball quickly and accurately.

The game really was a story of two halves. With the half-time scores level at 7-7, Newbold were still in with a real chance. Unfortunately, a lacklustre start to the second half saw Burton score twice in the first 10 minutes – leaving the ‘Bold too much of a hill to climb despite battling all the way to the final whistle. All in all, to quote captain Finn Williamson the boys put in a “good shift”, but there is still lots to work on.

Following this defeat, the Colts still have an opportunity in the National competition as they will move now to compete in the National Plate competition in November.
