Under 9s games for Rugby St Andrews and Old Laurentians
On an unseasonably warm April afternoon, St Andrews and Old Laurentians U9’s met at Webb Ellis Road as a precursor to the Clonmell Cup Final.
SA kicked off the first game for the Pride of Rugby cup with some purposeful running, driving up the pitch in the face of tough tackling from OL’s. The OL’s defence held strong, eventually gaining themselves possession. With direct running and confident handling OL’s attacked the Saints, breaking free to score despite some courageous tackling from George.
From the restart, Saints again attacked the OL’s, with George again showing the way with a fabulous run, however OL’s managed to gain possession, breaking through the tackles to run clear and score their second try.
Not wanting to let the game slip, Saints attacked from the restart with George finally getting a well deserved try for his teams efforts.
OL’s hit back to increase their lead with another well worked try, breaking tackles and passing into space.
Alex was unlucky not to score for the Saints just before half time, after finding the gaps in the OL’s defence.
In the second half, RSA attacked again with some determined running from John, but OL’s were quick to pressure the Saints in possession, and found themselves winning the ball and running in their forth try of the game.
Saints stirred for the last part of the game, with great tackling from Will gaining his team the ball. This time Saints had the opportunity to show their handling skills, with Oscar running in to score in the corner.

Saints started the second game on the front foot, an early try by Oscar giving his team a much needed boost.
OL’s put in run after run at the Saints defence, but some really determined tackling ,lead by Luke, kept the OL’s at bay.
Luke got on the ball, and drove his team into OL’s territory, but their defence was too strong, eventually winning themselves the ball.
From this they broke away to score twice in quick succession, gaining the lead at half time.
In the second half OL’s used the ball well and, despite George’s efforts in the tackle, increased their lead with a good run.
Saints rallied once more, Luke and George showing great commitment in the tackle.
Daniel and Will run at OL’s, gaining ground to take their team up to the corner, where Alex finally went over to score a well deserved consolation for his team.

OL’s the first to win the ‘Pride of Rugby’ trophy. Well done to all the players from both teams.
