Winning weekend for Newbold and Rugby Welsh

Rugby Lions’ 76-0 win over Copsewood secured them the Midlands 5 West (South) title at Webb Ellis Road on Saturday. With maximum points from their 13 games, Lions now cannot be caught at the top of the table.

In the same division Rugby Welsh’s Vice Presidents saw their team beat third-placed Birmingham Exiles 25-15 to lift them off the bottom of the table. Their third win of the season sees them on 18 points, one ahead of Coventry Technical, both having played 12 games.

In the battle of the top two in Midlands 2 East (South) at Parkfield Road, Newbold also had a good day. They beat league leaders Leighton Buzzard 28-24, but are still 9 points behind, with both teams having played 18 games.

It wasn’t the result Old Laurentians wanted in their crucial game at Barkers Butts, with the hosts winning 38-32, although they did pick up two bonus points. OLs are now fifth from bottom on 40 points after 21 games, ahead of Barkers Butts (38 points from 20 games), Malvern (33 from 20), Berkswell & Balsall (28 from 19) and Market Bosworth (14 from 20).

In Midlands 3 East (South) mid-table Rugby St Andrews couldn’t pull off another shock victory against runaway leaders Biggleswade and went down 42-8 at Ashlawn Road.
