Edwardian defeat and - Easter Monday Pat O’Neill Memorial Trophy

Edwardian 59 Rugby Welsh 14

Welsh went down to a defeat against a strong Solihull based team who have recent won the Junior Midlands Vase competition. On a sunny afternoon Welsh immediately realised they faced an uphill task when the opposition scored a converted try from their first attack through their pacy winger. Edwardian set out to run the ball at every opportunity and the sped of their backs and their offloading skills and support play caused Welsh problems all afternoon.

However despite the scoreline there were periods of play when Welsh caused the opposition problems. Rob Hadddock was at the forefront of the Welsh effort with fellow back row men Griffiths and Davies providing good support, whilst Adam Bond made some crucial tackles. Welsh twice attacked deep into the opposition 22 but turnover ball led to Edwardian counterattacking and scoring converted tries. Welsh were 28-0 down but were rewarded for their efforts shortly before half time when a powerful drive from Chris King saw him stopped close the line and Matty Richards crashed over from short range, ably assisted by Wayne Grant. The try was converted and Welsh were back in the game immediately after the interval when a powerful run from their centres saw Jim Davies in support to reduce the gap to 28-14.

However Edwardian responded well and their pace began to cause Welsh real problems. Welsh battled hard but Edwardian ran out comfortable winners with long range tries in the final quarter.
