SOCCER: Northants Combination

MDH Teamwear Northants Combination League Report

Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Star Award:

Ties played on 6 March: Kettering Park Rovers who became the first team to defeat Long Buckby Ravens in the league, and the first side to keep a clean sheet against them in all competitions this season.

Russell Roofing Premier Division:

Steady progress for Brixworth seems to be the key to their burgeoning title challenge. A seventh successive win, and their eighth in the last nine games sees them begin to reel in long-time leaders Weldon. Gareth Hughes, James Feasey and Neil Champelovier all registered in their comfortable 3-0 win over Harpole. Weldon stay one point ahead after their victory over Harborough Town, but it was far from plain sailing, as Alec McMillan scored for the hosts inside the opening minute. Weldon recovered from the early setback to dominate the midfield and were rewarded through goals from Alan Docherty and Michael Chong. The title picture could have been drastically different had it not been for a large slice of luck late in the game when a Harborough effort struck the bar and bounced down onto the goal-line. Brixworth and Weldon have yet to play each other this season, and those meetings could yet decide the destination of the trophy.

Kislingbury are not out of the mix yet, but having played two more games than their rivals matters are somewhat out of their hands. However, with local rivals Heyford visiting Beech Lane Kislingbury kept themselves in touch, taking the points and bragging rights with a 3-1 success. Darren Inns opened the scoring for the hosts. Martin Anderson netted the third of Medbourne's goals in their 3-1 win away Queen Eleanor. The result still keeps the visitors mathematical chance of winning the title alive, but more importantly, sees them climb above rivals Harborough in the table. Andrew Cox grabbed two goals as Khalsa tied 2-2 with bottom side Whitefield Norpol. Jay Vieyra and Jamie Bedford hit the replies.

Keystone Roofing Supplies Division 1:

Cold Ashby won the relegation six-pointer with Stanion 3-1, to secure their second league win of the season. Fellow strugglers Spratton stay level on points with Stanion, despite a 6-0 mauling at the hands of leaders Ringstead. Stuart Gates grabbed a brace, and the visitors misery was compounded by two own goals. Stanwick moved themselves further clear of trouble with a surprise 3-2 win away at Wootton St George.

That slip allowed Welford to move three points clear after a 4-2 away success over Drayton Grange. The pressure on the Villagers further increased as Blisworth moved up onto their shoulders with a 5-0 thrashing of Kingfisher. Marc Cross netted twice to help the Tunnelmen to within a point of their rivals.

Rothenberger Group Division 2:

Matty Bates' goal secured a point for Clipston in their game with Strip Mills to move top of the table. Gretton move second despite throwing away a three goal advantage at home to Great Doddington. Aaron McAlindon and Stewart Chapman both netted braces to put the hosts 4-1 up, but slack defending allowed Doddington back into it. Matt Graham then popped up with a crucial goals to break the visitors hearts and secure three point for his side. Matt Farrell and Kevin Eales secured a third point of the season for Weedon as they held Wollaston to a 2-2 draw.

Burton's Carl Bedford netted twice as his side avenged their 5-3 defeat to Islip earlier in the season. Martin Birse netted the only goal of the game for Ranelagh as they did the double over Wellingborough rivals Old Grammarians. Both games were settled by the same score line. Orchard Park defeated Bective 3-1

Division 3:

By some strange quirk of fate, all but one game in the division featured at least one player scoring twice. Arguably the game of the day was the tie between Wilbarston and Dainite.

Alex Stafford netted a brace for Dainite as they took a 4-1 half time lead, but the hosts managed a remarkable turnaround to claw their way back to 4-4 draw. Pete Harding netted twice to take his tally to 17 for the season.

Dainite's day was further ruined by a late red card.

Leaders Ise Lodge edged their tie with Corby Eagles 4-3, with Luke McIllroy getting a double. Rising Sun moved into second place after defeating Wilby 2-1 for the second time this season. Tyler Amphlett got the winner for Rising Sun.

Corby Everards progress continues after a 3-1 success away at Hillmorton. Dan White bagged a brace for the Corby side. James Farndell was the other brace-bagger, getting his goals in the Saxon's 4-0 home success against Crick.

Division 4:

Kettering Park Rovers stunned runaway leaders Long Buckby Ravens, inflicting their first league defeat of the season with a 2-0 result, and gaining revenge for their defeat at the hands of the same opposition in the Area Cup semi-final.

The result is the first time this season that any side has managed to close out the Ravens red-hot strike force, a remarkable achievement in itself. Wymington took full advantage with a 2-1 derby day win over FC Higham. Mitchell Pengley struck the opener for Wymington. West Haddon stay third after a 1-0 win over Corby Talisman. Jack Gayton got the goal.

Kingswood recorded their first win in four games with an 8-1 hammering of CSV. Richard Tate opened the scoring for league cup finalists Walgrave as they cruised to a comfortable 4-0 win over cellar-dwellers Corby Hearth, while Perry Rodgers opened the scoring for Kennedys who defeated Yardley 3-1.

Duston Garage (Bosch Service) Reserve Premier Division:

The downward spiral continues for Kislingbury after their fourth defeat in five games. Rob Chapman and Kevin Myers got the goals for opposition ON Chenecks 2-1 victors. Adam Jackson opened the scoring for Whitefield Norpol who routed Kettering Nomads 5-1 to move top of the table.

Barnes Gladman opened the scoring for Harborough Town who move third courtesy of a 2-1 win on the road at Moulton. Bugbrooke 'A' stay rooted to the foot of the table after a 4-2 defeat to local rivals Roade. Anthony Bandy netted twice for Roade. The other all South Northants tie ended with honours even, as Milton and Harpole shared a 2-2 draw. Danny Burke and Steven Thain settled the all Corby tie in Pegasus favour with a 2-1 win over Khalsa.

Reserve Division 1:

37 goals were scored in the division as every victorious side enjoyed big wins. Orchard Park stay top after a 7-0 drubbing of Corby Locomotives. Tom Whittaker got two of the goals for Heyford as they cruised past Queen Eleanor 5-2. A miserable day for Bugbrooke was completed when the 'B' side crashed to an 8-0 defeat at home to local rivals Blisworth. The visitors were 3-0 up at the break, and completed the scoring with just over an hour gone. Shaun Wilkes and Josh Dawson both scored twice. Weldon 'A' thumped local rivals Stanion 6-1, after doubles from Steve Gibson and Mark Bradley. Lee Chapman, Lawrence McCall and Barry Panter all scored twice for Medbourne as they outclassed Finedon Volta 6-2.

Reserve Division 2:

Harpole and Weedon both remain in contention for second place behind runaway leaders Earls Barton after their respective wins. Harpole defeated Old Grammarians 2-1 through Ashley Burton and Harri Winters, while Weedon beat Islip 4-1 at Tollbar.

David Blake's hat-trick for Dainite moves them off the foot of the table for the first time this season with their maiden league win 4-3 over fellow strugglers Wilby.

Jon Ogden also scored three for Stanwick, 4-2 victors over Crick. Drayton Grange meanwhile defeated Spratton 2-1.
