Honorary post open to writers for Warwick festival

WARWICK Words Festival has launched a competition to find its first-ever Festival Writer in Residence.

The writer in residence will be expected to perform their own work, get involved in key activities throughout the year and help to promote and develop creative writing and reading across the county.

The competition for this honorary post is open to anyone aged 18 and over living in Warwickshire.

Festival director Helen Meeke said: “When we produced our first-ever book last year, we realised that there were a lot of local fiction writers as well as poets.

“We wanted to give story writers a chance to showcase their talents and so, this year, we’ve decided to replace our Poet Laureate with a festival writer in residence.”

Writers must submit one piece of imaginative fiction, which shows their creative writing skills in 300 words, and a statement of interest.

The winner and runners-up will have the opportunity to read their work at the festival launch at Underwood Wines in Warwick, on Friday September 28 from 6pm.

Special guests will include Claire Tomalin, Roger McGough, Kate Mosse and many others.

Warwick Words’ latest project, On the Edge, is a series of workshops and talks developing contemporary writing, poetry and spoken word skills based in Leamington.

More details about the new venture, supported by the Arts Council of England and Warwick District Council, are available in the Warwick Words Festival brochure.
