Still rocking Girlschool are coming to Leamington

THEY burst onto the scene in the male dominated heavy metal world of the late 1970s and proceeded to become one the most successful groups of the era.

Thirty years on and Girlschool are still touring and have just re-recorded their most famous album, Hit and Run.

They are the longest running all-female rock band after being formed from a school band in London and had considerable success throughout the 80s with their punk-metal sound.

Over the past ten years they have been releasing new albums and writing new songs and will be playing at the Leamington Assembly next month. Three of the original lineup are still in the band, the only change being Jackie Chambers who replaced Kelly Johnson who passed away in 2007.

On the re-release of Hit and Run singer and guitarist Kim McAuliffe said: “I’m just amazed that people still love it. Even young people come up at our gigs now with copies that they found on the internet or in shops.”

She admits that they “weren’t sure” about the album at first, and had written it in an archaic old studio.

She added: “We were surprised and obviously delighted at the success of Demolition, so we were hoping that this one would do well. But we weren’t quite sure how well it would do.”

“We’ve made quite a few changes. But I’m not going to say anything about them because we’re hoping that our fans will notice for themselves, just to see how well they know the original ones.

“But of course it’s a different sound, we have Jackie now, obviously, instead of Kelly, and also again, studio-wise it’s just a completely different experience because the technology now is incredible compared to what we had in those days.”

The group will perform the new album, and tracks from their back catalogue at the Assembly on Friday March 7.
