The Diary of Anne Frank at Rugby Theatre

The show opens on May 9 and will be significant for Rugby girl, Carly Tremayne, who plays the title role.

It is Carly’s first major part at the Henry Street venue, in only her second show at the theatre. She made her debut when she appeared as part of the ensemble in this year’s sell-out panto, Aladdin.

Mark Tolchard, who directs the powerful dramatisation, says he has been incredibly impressed with Carly during rehearsals.

“It’s a massive role, but one she’s really thrown herself into,” says Mark.

“She’s had very little stage experience, but she’s been wonderful to work with and has been a real breath of fresh air.”

The diary Anne Frank wrote was turned into a book which has been read by millions around the world.

She and her family hid for two years in tiny rooms in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam, concealed behind a bookcase in a building where her father worked. Anne wrote about her time in hiding, recording

her feelings about what was going on at the time, and about her relationship with her family.

The theatre’s performance of the play coincides with the 70th anniversary of Anne Frank’s death at the age of just 15 amid the horrors of the Bergen Belsen concentration camp.

She died just weeks before the end of the war.

The play opens on May 9 for a week-long run. It starts at 7.30pm each night.
