Ten families with pupils at Oakfield Primary Academy have received free laptops in a donation from the Asda Foundation which the school said will help them flourish with online learning.

Over the last year lockdown measures forced pupils at the school to learn from home - a situation which quickly became very difficult for those families which did not have and could not afford suitable equipment.

A spokesperson for the school said: "At Oakfield, we have delivered bespoke recorded lessons on our school website as a digital platform for our pupils to access.

"This has been met with overwhelming positivity and thanks from our school community, who have shared in record numbers that this way of delivering learning has been a hugely successful initiative for families with large numbers of school age children to access at a time to suit them, in a way that can fit around family life and commitments.

"However, without the means to access the school's digital platform it is impossible for some of our families to access that quality bespoke teaching input from their teachers.

"Without the help to get that equipment out this would not necessarily have been the case."

Oakfield Primary Academy was nominated by a member of the community to receive 10 laptops and support bundles containing headphones, dongles and data to support children with remote learning.

The spokesperson added: "These laptops will provide some of our most vulnerable children the freedom and opportunity to access remote learning and actively engage with their teachers and peers.

"For 10 of our families, this is incredible news and will allow these pupils to flourish at home with their remote learning.

"Oakfield Primary Academy is incredibly grateful for the Asda Foundations support and commitment to their community. In such unprecedented times, we are glad that community spirit can still bring us together."

Deputy head and remote learning lead Mrs Nealon said: "Our families who have engaged with remote learning have shared over and again how incredible Oakfield Primary Academy's remote learning package has been, but for those families who experience digital poverty this immediately puts them at an insurmountable disadvantage.

"We are so very grateful to Asda for this incredibly generous donation which has helped to ensure that all of our pupils can access our excellent remote

learning offer at one of the most difficult times in their educational careers so far."

Headteacher Mrs Adams added: "It has been an incredibly difficult time for our families and staff, but their determination and resilience has shone through.

"We are dedicated to support our families each and every day but this initiative has allowed us to enable and empower our pupils to thrive and achieve independently."
