Southam kids make the perfect English tea

IT’S a classic summer of brief sunshine, incipient hosepipe bans and pouring rain, and Southam College pupils held a bake-off to see who could create the best afternoon tea on Wednesday.

Pupils presented their winning efforts - complete with sandwiches cut into triangles, fine china, scones, cream, jam and a generously dusted Victoria sponge cake - to the none-more-English figure of town mayor Cllr Mike Gaffney.

The ‘Great Bake-off’ was held to celebrate the launch of the Welsh Road West school’s new food room, with pupils working in pairs set the challenge of using the brand new equipment to create the ultimate tea spread - preferably using leaves, not bags.

The winners were Jessica Burton and Michaela Coleman. Aimee Clifton and Annie Fenton came second, and Edward Evetts and Joel Ducket came third.
