Rugby’s Avon Valley School has desribed its GCSE results as “excellent”.

In total, 57 per cent of students achieved A*-C in maths and English. The school is particularly pleased with the strong mathematics results achieved this year; in addition to strong English results which were received both in March and this summer.

The school said that these figures have increased significantly from last year and “demonstrate the commitment, effort and aspirations shown by its students”. The school’s results also buck the national trend where GCSE results have shown the biggest ever year-on-year decline.

A number of individual students achieved exceptionally high results. These included:

Shannon Mahal - 10 A*s, 3 As and 1 B grade

Roanna Pedley – 8 A*s, 4 As, 1 C grade

Weronika Kowalczuk – 4 A*s, 7 As, 2 B grades

Spondan Biswas (head boy) - 3 A*s and 9 A grades

Santa Svike - 1 A*, 9 As and 2 B grades.

Headteacher Alison Davies said: “Our students have produced a fantastic set of results this year and I am delighted that their hard work and commitment has been so richly rewarded. As always staff have worked extremely hard and, with the support of parents and carers, students have earned grades that will move them smoothly forward into the next stage of their education. Congratulations to all of Year 11 - you have done yourselves and Avon Valley proud!”

Many of the school’s leavers will progress on to study at local colleges or sixth forms and a number of students have been accepted on to apprenticeships.
