Paralympian celebrates with MS group

A PARALYMPIC champion who has multiple sclerosis joined members of the Leamington, Warwick and Kenilworth branch of the MS Society to celebrate the group’s 40th anniversary.

Dressage medallist Simon Laurens spoke to around 80 guests, including the mayors of all three towns and representatives from Warwick District Council, about his time in Beijing in 2008. He also gave them an insight into how expensive it is to be a paralympian, all of whom are self-funding.

Branch vice-chairman Jayne Canning, who was diagnosed with MS 26 years ago, said: “We didn’t realise how expensive it is to keep all those horses - he depends on donations.

“He was an excellent speaker and we all had a lovely afternoon. It was really nice to get all the mayors there.”

The event was held at the Hilton hotel in Warwick on November 27, 40 years to the day since the voluntary organisation was born.
