Accessible art in a barn

THOSE in search of a pleasant spring day out in the countryside can combine a trip to Preston Bagot with appreciating the work of professional Midlands artists.

The Art Barn at the Old Rectory in the village is showcasing more than 50 paintings and ceramics which all explore innovative ways of using colour by a group of six members of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists who have grouped together under the name Artscape.

Helen Carslake, who runs the gallery-in-a-barn and adjoining bed and breakfast, said: “I thought it would be a nice opening to the season because it’s all accessible art.

“A lot of it is landscape, but there are also pictures of animals, some very stylish art, some wonderful abstracts with lovely chunky blocks of colour, as well as traditional pretty scenes.”

The exhibition, Visions of Colour, features works by Lynda Kettle, Jan Gay, June Dudleston, Pat Landon and Jane Duppa Miller, complemented by the ceramics of Hilary LaForce whose works are inspired by natural objects and ancient classical vessels. Limited edition giclée prints and cards will also be on sale and refreshments will be available.

Helen added: “The summer exhibition is going to be absolutely stunning, but it will be quite different to this one as it is going to be a contemporary collection. People can make a day out of it as it’s a lovely area over here.”

The exhibition opens on Saturday May 21 and is on until Monday May 30, from 10am to 6pm each day.

The Art Barn is along the lane from the Crab Mill pub in Preston Bagot, near Henley in Arden. To find out more, call 843023 or email [email protected]
