School chess championships
Check out our chess theme this week with these two pictures from our archive.
The studious youngsters concentrating on their games in the top one, were taking part in the Rugby Schools Chess Championships in November 1978. With all the flared trousers and patterned jumpers of the day it’s a shame it’s not in colour! The children would be representing schools from all over the borough. Although there’s nothing on the picture to say where it was taken, the curtains and background are the same in both pictures, making it also Rokeby Middle School in Anderson Avenue.
The second picture is of successful chess players from the school 25 years ago in March 1992. Hope it brings back some good memories for you all.
