How about this for a wonderful view of Rugby’s Sheep Street. I’d not seen this old postcard before, which (like the others below) belong to Tony Cockerill’s collection. The building on the left hand corner we’ve mentioned in Memory Lane before , when Anne Langley told us it was formerly the Red Lion Inn and was bought in the 17th century by Richard Elborow, who donated the almshouses to Rugby. In this photo it was Stannard’s Wholesale Wine & Spirit Merchants, established 1635 and boasting being a free house for nearly 300 years. The Thai Orchid restaurant stands there now.
On the next building, in the white writing below the third-floor windows, I can make out the words ‘Horse Shoes’ of the Horse Shoes hotel. On the right hand corner, Taylor’s Chemist was most recently ‘It’s a Gift’ shop. You might just be able to see a girl looking out of the window, watching the photographer.
