Rugby Rover Scouts 1931
There must be a few fathers and grandfathers readers can recognise on this 1931 photograph of the 6th Rugby Rovers, who might have been based in Bilton.
It’s the last of the three pictures Sue Berridge kindly brought in and includes her father, Cec Burton, who is fourth from the right on the back row, next to the leader. Sue thinks it was probably taken on camp somewhere fairly local, as although they were the forerunners of today’s venture scouts, in those days they didn’t venture far! At one time the group used to meet above what is now Ewington’s shop in St Matthew’s Street. Cec, who would have been 18 in this picture, met Sue’s mother Ethel Newman through the Rovers and went on to run the cub scout pack in Bilton in the 1930s. He stayed in Rugby and was involved in the mountaineering club and taught carpentry at the college.
