This is another of Peter Smith’s cricketing pictures, this time from September 1947 when 700 people watched a Rugby XI play Warwickshire in aid of the county appeal fund at Bilton Road. Both teams are pictured together in front of Rugby Cricket Club’s pavilion.

The county declared at 220-5, with GF Arthur having fielded exceptionally well for Rugby and held three catches, one of them from over his head while running.

Warwickshire left themselves under two hours to get the Rugby side out but succeeded only in dismissing half the side for 105 runs for a drawn game. Hollies was Warwickshire’s best bowler on the day, taking four wickets for 32 runs.

WFR Morgan was top scorer with 39, after several early lapses. The other Rugby team members mentioned in the report were RHM Burton, C Ford , H Davis, MM Burton, RJ Fawcus, GG Tebbitt, GF Arthur, C King, C Wilson and V Noon.
