The caring faces of St Cross

Looking Back
Looking Back

These smiling nurses were enjoying their prize-giving at the Hospital of St Cross in 1952.

It was the year Miss JL Ryde took over as the new matron, coming to Rugby from a hospital in London.
She is in the centre of the front row in the dark uniform. The surname may be familiar as she had a ward named after her.
At that times, St Cross trained State Registered Nurses. The training took three years and everyone lived in during their training.
One of the trainees was Jose Worthington (now Jose Lester), who is in the front row near the ladies with the flowers. This is her photograph.
She greatly enjoyed her time at St Cross and spent several years working there on and off.
She remembers that the man in the front row was senior surgeon George Mitchell.
