November 30, 1918

A special meeting of the Rugby Prisoners of War Help Committee was held at Benn Buildings. Hon organising secretary Mr J Reginald Barker said that the immediate repatriation of our prisoners of war was being made one of the terms of the armistice. It was no longer necessary to send individual parcels of food to our prisoners in Germany, but it would be several weeks before all men returned to England.

November 29, 1968

Rugby is to lose its Ear, Nose and Throat and Ophthalmic hospital services - and that’s official. After months of speculation, during which a protest petition has been signed by 10,000 people, the decision was taken on Wednesday in Birmingham at a meeting of the Birmingham Regional Hospital Board. However, this does not mean a running down of St Cross, or a reduction of hospital services for the town, stated plans committee chairman Mr JC Heather.

November 25, 1993

People power took to the streets in the fight to save services at Rugby’s Hospital of St Cross. A march left St Cross and went into the town centre and on to Caldecott Park for a rally on Saturday. Following on from two packed public meetings, central Rugby was brought to a standstill again when thousands of people joined the march and rally. Organiser Maggie Perkins said: “We had 5,000 to 6,000 people on the march and there was easily more than 1,000 in the park. It is marvellous so many people turned up in such awful weather.”
