Alex wins his immigration battle to continue his cancer treatment in the USA

The immigration problem that was threatening his extended stay for treatment at the University of Kansas hospital has been overcome.

His ‘Alexander’s Journey’ Facebook page said this week: “Informed by United States Citizenship & Immigration Service that Alex can stay & complete his treatment!”

The family, who live near Lutterworth, then thanked American politicians who helped them, including Kris Kobach, the Secretary of State for Kansas, and also the Foreign Office and the British Embassy in the US.

Alex’s father Jeff Goodwin, speaking to the Mail, explained that the family originally went to America on a 90-day visa. That was due to run out in April.

“Since then further information has come to light making it necessary to stay longer” said Jeff, who is a police officer based in Rugby.

Now Alex should be able to complete his course of treatment and - all being well - return to the UK in July.

In the meantime, Alex has been having tough physiotherapy and hydrotherapy treatment at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas.

He has had radical major surgery, including the removal of the cancerous femur bone from his right leg.

“Hard day today” says the most recent entry on his ‘Alexander’s Journey’ page. “Skin is sensitive and Alex feels weak from the chemo.”

Alex was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone and tissue cancer, in June last year.

With treatment options running out in Britain, the Goodwin family made the decision to fundraise for Alex and go for cutting-edge treatment in the United States.

More extreme treatment lies ahead for the gentle, charismatic Alex.
