The Rugby school suspended lessons for a day in the last week of the summer term so that all pupils and staff could take part in the event, whether as a competitor or a spectator.

Athletes from years seven to ten competed in their houses - Apollo, Fortune, Garrick and Phoenix (named after West End theatres to reflect the school’s specialist performing arts status) - in field events including javelin, discus and shot putt. Heats were also held for track events including 1500m, 800m, 400m, 100m and hurdles.

In the afternoon, the whole school descended onto the school field to cheer on the athletes as they competed in the track event finals. The day’s sporting activities were finished off with the staff relay race.

The overall winning house on the day was Garrick.

To create a fitting celebratory atmosphere, the pupils dressed in non-uniform in their house’s colour, while many also painted their faces and made banners and flags. Each house ran a tuck shop, the profits from which - added to non-uniform donations - totalled more than £1,000. This money has been split between the house charities: Zoe’s Place, Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance, the Myton Hospices and Team Joel.

PE faculty leader Dan Payne said: “It was great to see the students cheering on their classmates which created an amazing atmosphere on the school field. The students competing put in a huge amount of effort with many of the school’s record broken.”

Headteacher Alison Davies added: “Once again our PE department did a superb job in organising and running a full day of athletic competition. All the students involved in the day should be proud of themselves.”
