Proposals for a new 200-berth marina off the Oxford Canal near Barby have been thrown out.

Daventry District Council’s planning committee said the cumulative impact of similar developments nearby, and the impact it would have on the conservation area, were too serious.

The plans, for land off Barby Lane, had been recommended for approval by DDC’s planning officers, and backed by the Canal and River Trust (CRT).

Members of the public and councillors questioned the CRT’s response with some claiming it is not allowed to comment on the demand for berths or the impact on conjestion, and others point out it has a financial interest in there being more boats for it to licence.

The plans were refused by eight votes to one.
