COUNCILLORS have given the go ahead for a huge new marina to be built in the countryside near Rugby.

Daventry District Council’s planning committee met last night (Wednesday) to discuss the controversial plans to build the 550-berth ‘monster marina’ in Onley.

The Barby Pools Marina would provide around 100 extra jobs and improve the ecology of the site, according to developers.

There has been huge criticism of the project though by campaigners, leading to a recent protest led by actors Timothy West and Prunella Scales.

Last night Daventry councillors approved the plans.

Because it’s on the border of both Rugby and Daventry, Rugby Borough Council will also need to approve the plans for it to be given the final go-ahead.

Planning officers in Rugby have recommended the plans for approval.

The planning application is due to be discussed at a committee meeting at Rugby Town Hall on Wednesday at 5.30pm.
