Rugby mother and son Hayley and Tommy Lloyd took centre stage today (Thursday) as they officially unveiled the new Debenhams Rugby store at Elliott’s Field Retail Park.
Hayley and Tommy cut the ceremonial ribbon at 10am to mark official opening of the long awaited store - part of the new improved retail park which has been years in the planning.
Ahead of the opening Hayley tweeted: “Very excited about opening @Debenhams in #Rugby at 10am Thank you for treating us so well. We’re overwhelmed.”
Debenhams launched a search to find a local hero as part of a competition to open the store.
Hayley and Tommy, who live in Rugby, were nominated by many of their family and friends, because of their awe-inspiring positivity after Tommy’s diagnosis with muscular dystrophy, an untreatable and incurable muscle wasting disease.
Following the news of Tommy’s diagnosis, the pair have spurred themselves into action and together raised tens of thousands of pounds for Muscular Dystrophy UK, which provide research grants in the hope of finding a cure.
Both Hayley and Tommy have undertaken a wide variety of fundraising activities including skydives, and Tommy even bathed for over four hours in a bath of baked beans at a local supermarket.
The pair’s outlook on life and fundraising prowess have not only made them well-known within the Rugby community but also further afield.
Hayley has even been named Muscular Dystrophy Campaign’s Communicator of the Year.
As part of the opening celebrations at Debenhams Rugby, Hayley and Tommy were treated to a special makeover and exclusive preview of the store.
They then joined store manager Sam Zeen at 10am for the cutting of the ribbon.
Hayley tweeted: “Very proud of Tommy opening @Debenhams at #rugby this morning. Selected for all his @MDUK_News #fundraising
“We never stopped smiling all morning @Debenhams #rugby Thank you for your kindness.”
The first 50 customers into the new store also received a special gift card worth £10 to spend.
The new store showcases Debenhams’ exclusive designer ranges from fashion designers such as Jasper Conran, Henry Holland and Ben De Lisi.
Debenhams Rugby also boasts a cosmetics department.
The store also has a fragrance hall and café, as well as womenswear, accessories, lingerie, menswear, childrenswear and Homeware departments.
