LOYAL and loveable they may be, but dogs tend to have a habit of getting a bit scruffy and smelly too.
The good news for fans of all things canine is that there’s a business in Rugby that will get your pet looking its best - and pleasantly fragrant, too.
Carmel Street runs Sweeney Dogs by the canal in Hillmorton. She started the business two years ago as a part-time venture, but went full-time last month.
She said: “It’s going really well.
“We’ve got quite a lot of customers through word of mouth over the past couple of years, so people seem pleased with our service. The most common comment we get from customers is about how nice their dog smells!”
Carmel, who has previously worked for a franchise business, the Dunchurch Park Hotel and Sainsbury’s, trained in dog grooming at a special academy in Leicester. She now deals with 15 to 20 dogs per week.
She said: “I knew my previous job would just be temporary, and I love a challenge, so I thought I’d give this a go.
“I’ve always loved dogs, and 95 per cent of dogs I deal with love coming here. It’s a very relaxing location, and I have a lot of patience, so it’s quite a calm place.”
Carmel advises owners to “keep on top of brushing” their dogs and, especially at this time of year, to check for any grass seeds that may have become lodged in their paws.
