A residential caravan site for gypsies and travellers is to be created on Green Belt land in Brandon.

Ten pitches and two amenity blocks will be put on the land on Brandon Lane which is alongside an existing site known as Bryants Bungalow which has 13 pitches. The new site currently consists of a coniferous wood and paddock.

Brandon and Bretford Parish Council had objected to the plan saying that it would be a ‘very significant’ expansion of an already very large site and another objection from a neighbour said the site had already been extended twice.

But councillors at this week’s Rugby Borough Council planning committee voted 11-1 in favour after admitting there was a lack of suitable alternatives.

The council needs to find 24.4 extra pitches for gypsy and traveller families by 2023.

Cllr Neil Sandison (Lib Dem Eastlands) said: “It has already been identified that we have a shortage of available sites within Rugby.

"We did, in the local plan, make a call for sites but no-one responded. Let’s back this application as we still have another 14 pitches to find.”
