Charity’s fight against cancer continues with a special relay at Stoneleigh Park

Taking place at Stoneleigh Park, the two-day event gives all those who have been touched by the disease, as well as people wishing to support the cause, the chance to meet and spend time thinking about lost loved ones and to help fund research into cancer.

Anyone of any age can take part in the relay, which will see thousands of people walking continuously around the showground for 21 hours.

There will be activities thoughout the two days, including a ‘candle of hope’ ceremony at dusk, during which bags decorated with touching messages in memory or in celebration of loved ones are filled with sand and lit up with candles around the track.

Hannah Knowles, volunteer chairmain of the Stoneleigh event, said: “Relay For Life is a great way to spend time with your friends, family and colleagues while raising money for a seriously worthwhile cause. Everyone knows someone who has been touched by cancer.

“Taking part is a positive way to be part of your local community and help make a real difference.”

Beginning on Saturday August 13 at 2pm with a survivors’ ‘lap of honour’, members of each team will take it in turn to walk around the track in succession, with all teams having at least one person walking at any one time.

Tents will be set up for anyone wishing to rest or sleep and there will be food available throughout the event, which will end on Sunday August 14 at 11am.

The work of Cancer Research UK has helped to double survival rates during the past 40 years and funds raised during the event will make it possible for the charity to continue exploring further possibilities for treatment.

Ms Knowles said: “We would love to hear from anyone who would to take part in the survivors’ lap of honour or who would like to enter a team.

“Cancer affects so many people every year.

“Relay For Life is a great way to support them by raising awareness and money to fund Cancer Research UK’s life-saving research. We hope to see as many as you down there to enjoy this unique event.”

Volunteers are also needed to help support the relay over the two days.
