Childbirth halts travellers’ eviction

LEGAL steps to move on an illegal traveller encampment near Whitnash were halted this week when it emerged one of the travellers was expecting a baby.

The encampment of five caravans is believed to have arrived at Harbury Lane recreation ground on Tuesday morning. A gate to the playing fields had been taken off its hinges.

Warwick District Council, which owns the land, had begun the legal process to evict them but stopped when it emerged one of the women was pregnant.

Cllr Bernard Kirton (Ind, Whitnash) believes they are the same group which parked at Spartan Close in Tachbrook Park Industrial Estate last week.

A council spokeswoman said the group had been told they were camping illegally but the council was not aware of any complaints about their behaviour.

She added: “Because of the policies we have here we have to be mindful of the welfare of the travellers.

“We will take the legal route once we are happy that the lady who is having the baby is OK.”
