Components for Great Britain’s new aircraft carriers will be manufactured in Rugby.

Rugby MP Mark Pawsey has welcomed the publication of the Strategic Defence and Security Review – which will see more money for a comprehensive plan for the Armed Forces, counter-terrorism police and intelligence agencies.

The Government will invest £178 billion, meeting the NATO target of spending two per cent GDP (gross domestic product) on defence. GDP is the monetary value of all the finished goods and services produced within a country’s borders in a specific time period. It will see the establishment of two new Strike Brigades, to rapidly respond to threats and investing in security services. Mr Pawsey also welcomed the ongoing investment in the aircraft carriers, which will provide business for local businesses.

Mr Pawsey said: “We can be proud that major components for the Royal Navy aircraft carriers, HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Prince of Wales, are being manufactured in Rugby.”
