A car drove into an officer and smashed down bollards as it tried to get away from police on Sunday evening.

When police approached a vehicle outside the London House pub in Chapel Street at around 10pm on Sunday, the car sped towards them.

The vehicle was blocked in the narrow part of Little Church Street between McDonald’s and WH Smith by the police car.

According to police, the vehicle reversed at speed and attempted to turn around outside McDonald’s.

An officer ran after the vehicle but the driver reversed and knocked into him.

The vehicle collided with the police car before speeding off down Chapel Street. It smashed through two sets of bollards and into the car park outside Asda.

A police chase continued through Corporation Street and Lawford Road.

At the relief road junction the car crashed into the traffic lights.

The driver, a 30-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of dangerous driving and was taken to police custody.

He has been bailed to appear before police on June 5.

The officer hit by the car was discharged from hospital a short time after the incident.
